The year was 2000. I was on my dream vacation to Peru, going first to the Amazon, then to Machu Picchu and onto Lake Titicaca. I tripped and fell at least twelve times on that trip. What was happening to me?
When I returned home, I went to my doctor who ran a series of tests. She reported that she was unable to find to find the cause.
I continued on with my life sensing something was wrong but doing my very best to ignore it. I was in a not so blissful, state of denial. I continued to get gradually worse. Finally I was no longer able to maintain my denial and I saw a neurologist who eventually diagnosed me with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis.
Me? I didn’t believe it. Most of what I read was doom and gloom. Still, I didn’t believe it. I stepped up my exercise. I was taking spinning classes, yoga, and walking around the Rose Bowl a couple of times week. I continued to gradually get worse, even with the prescribed medication. Walking the Rose Bowl and yoga became too difficult. I curtailed my travel but I wasn’t ready to give in.
Then I found Sonia. Little did I know that fitness to Sonia is much more than muscles and tendons. Mind, body, and spirit would more accurately describe her orientation. On the phone she immediately inquired about my diet, stress levels, work and personal life. She also asked me my goals. My goal was to travel where I wanted without limitations.
Within 5 months I have seen improvements in all areas of my life. My walking and balance have improved and I am feeling more energetic. But, the most dramatic changes have been in my outlook on life. I am feeling hopeful and happy in ways I never imagined.
